The fastest way to register as a pharmacy technician in Alabama is to apply online through the ALBOP Licensure Gateway with your documents already prepared: a driver's license, a photo taken within the past 6 months, and a card to pay the fees, which total $104. Most delays happen because people start the application before they have these items ready.

## Before you start

Get these three things in one place before you open the application:

- A current driver's license or state ID.
- A photo of yourself taken within the past 6 months. Plain background, clear face, no hat or sunglasses.
- A debit or credit card to pay $104 in non-refundable fees: $60 application, $40 background check, and a $4 service fee.

You must be at least 17 years old. You do not need to pass an exam to register, and you do not need a high school diploma to register.

## Step 1: Apply through the ALBOP Licensure Gateway

Go to gateway.albop.com and start a new pharmacy technician application. Upload your ID and photo, then answer the criminal history questions truthfully. Untruthful answers can deny an application on their own, even if the underlying record would not have been a problem.

## Step 2: Background check

The $40 background check fee is included in your $104 payment. There is no separate appointment to schedule. If you have a record, the Board may require a hearing before approving your registration, which adds time. Most clean applications move through without a hearing.

## Step 3: Get your registration number and start working

Once approved, you receive a registration number that begins with the letter T followed by seven digits (TXXX-XXXX). You can start working immediately under a pharmacist's supervision. Alabama law requires you to wear a name tag identifying you as a pharmacy technician while on duty.

## Step 4: Start your 6-month training clock

The day your registration is issued, your six-month training clock starts under the [ALBOP Rule 680-X-2-.14 training requirement](/alabama-rule-680-x-2-14-compliance). You must finish an approved training program and submit proof to the Board within 10 days of completion. Passing the PTCB exam or the ExCPT exam counts as training and satisfies the same rule.

Most students finish the Alabama Pharm Tech course in 2 to 4 weeks. One payment of $199 covers everything.

## The three mistakes that slow people down

1. Starting the application without documents ready. People stop halfway to find an ID or take a new photo, then forget to come back.
2. Waiting on training until late in the 6 months. The clock does not pause. Start training the same week you register so a slow week at work or a sick day does not push you past the deadline.
3. Letting registration lapse. Alabama pharmacy technician registrations expire December 31 of odd-numbered years, and renewal requires 6 hours of continuing education with at least 2 live hours. Miss the renewal and you cannot legally work until you reinstate.

## FAQ

### Can I work as a pharmacy technician before training is finished?
